    Introduction

    This tool reduces an image's file size while keeping it in the same format — a JPG stays a JPG, a PNG stays a PNG. It isn't a converter: nothing about the file type changes, only how much space it takes up.

    How Compression Works Here

    Reducing a photo's file size almost always means throwing away some visual detail — the two are directly linked. This tool applies a compression pass automatically to each file you upload; there's currently no control in the interface to choose a specific quality level or compression strength yourself, so every image gets the same treatment regardless of how much you'd be willing to trade off. In practice this means you can't ask for "just a little" or "as much as possible" — you get one result, and if it isn't small enough or the quality drop is too noticeable, there's no slider to adjust and retry.

    What Formats Actually Work

    The upload area lists WebP, PNG, JPG, AVIF, GIF, and SVG as supported. In practice, JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, and SVG files upload and compress successfully; AVIF and GIF files are rejected with an error despite being listed as accepted. If you have an AVIF or GIF image to shrink, this tool currently won't process it; you'd need to convert it to a supported format first.

    The Result Is Never Bigger Than What You Uploaded

    Unlike a format conversion, where the output can sometimes end up larger than the original, this tool checks the compressed file's size against the original before returning it: if compression would have produced a bigger file than you started with, you get your original file back unchanged instead. You should never see an "expansion" result here — the output is always the same size as the original or smaller.

    What SVG Compression Actually Means

    SVG is a text-based, vector format rather than a grid of pixels, so "compressing" an SVG doesn't work the same way it does for a photo. There's no pixel detail to discard — reducing an SVG's size generally means stripping unnecessary code, comments, or formatting from the underlying file rather than lowering visual quality. Don't expect the same kind of dramatic size reduction from an SVG that you might see from a large photo.

    After Compression

    The result shows the percentage saved compared to your original file, labelled as compression. Photographic images (JPG, WebP) with a lot of fine detail generally compress more noticeably than flat graphics or already-optimised PNGs, since there's simply more redundant visual information for lossy compression to remove.

    What to Check Before You Use the Result

    • There's no quality control to adjust. One compression level is applied to every file; if the result looks too degraded, this tool doesn't offer a way to redo it at a lighter setting.
    • AVIF and GIF aren't actually supported, despite appearing in the upload prompt. Only JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, and SVG files will process successfully.
    • File uploads are capped at 10 MB each — and, as above, only the JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, and SVG formats among those listed actually complete.
    • The format doesn't change. If you need a smaller file in a different format entirely — say, a PNG converted down to a JPG — use PNG To JPG first, since that conversion itself often reduces file size for photographic content.

    When This Is the Right Tool

    • An upload system has a file size limit: assignment portals, email attachments, and content management systems often cap how large a single image can be, and this tool can bring an oversized photo under that limit without changing its format.
    • Page-loading speed matters: smaller image files load faster, which matters for any website or slideshow where images make up most of the download size.
    • You have several images to shrink at once: selecting or dropping multiple files compresses each one and offers a single ZIP download for all of them together.

    If you specifically need control over how aggressive the compression is, or need a guaranteed target file size, this tool's fixed, automatic approach won't give you that — it applies one setting and returns one result.
